Artefact 1 – My 15 pictures about ‘memory’

31 10 2008

I think the idea is from the life, every day living on the world, you must have so many things can make you happy, make you sad, and make you hard to forget. And there also have something is very normal in your life, they’re so normal so you always lose sight of them. But I think if I put them on the pictures, most people will like them, because they’re just beside you.

Just like when I came from China, I get on the flight in Shanghai airport, then 13 hours in the plane, i feel so difficult in my inner space, not sad, not happy, hard to say by word. Then I took the pictures of the sky, just think the world is so big or so small.

And my first Halloween day in UK, my friend told me it’s very interesting, everyone will make up, and they will go on street. And the children will knock your door and ask for candy. Then I make up myself and took my camera to the city centre, but there were almost no one there, I don’t know why, so the pictures of my halloween day is very longly, lonely taxi, longly street, so i change the street’s color to pink, just in order to make it warmer and more lovely. Afterward my friend told me that the reason why the street was so longly is the people were going to the club. Then my friend took me to the club.. I took some pictures there, it was hot and interesting there.

I think if you look at them from another side, they may become more interesting.

The below 15 pictures are the embodiment of my idea..

Place: Coventry, UK

Camera: Nikon D80

Tool: Photoshop CS2

The Photographer’s intentions

> What do you think the photographer’s aims and intentions are?

The photographer is trying to express a feeling is that the people who is confusing from his inner space. And discomposure, so want a place for him is quite and safety.

> Does the image successfully communicate the photographer’s aims and intentions?

I think it is. The forest is very quite and dark, there almost is no light in the forest, but outside the forest we can see the sky is light and maybe there is dawn or twilight, even is a sunshine afternoon. But he just wants to find somewhere safety and quite, only he,to think about something which he’s confusing or scaring. The picture using the panoramic camera, long exposures can be successfully communicating this scene. And the perfect is that the photographer using almost no light in this picture, the photographer using the fading light, the picture is dark and obscuration, but there is small fire there, expressed the man’s inner space is discomposure.

Analyzing the image

> What message does the image convey?

The forest is quite and dark, there has little light in the forest, but outside the forest, we can see the sky is light and maybe there is dawn or twilight, even is a sunshine afternoon. But he maybe just sitting there or standing there, the line of sight is his, the picture we see, is what he was seeing in the forest. It’s lonely, and dark, but maybe he just wants to find somewhere is safety and quite, only he, to think about something which he’s confusing or scaring.

> What techniques do you think have been used to make the image?

The photographer uses the panoramic camera, long exposures, and the fading light in this picture, and is subjective in this picture, expressing through the subjective line of sight.
> Has the image been staged?

 Yes, using the fading light.
Personal Responses

> How does the image make you feel?

Feel to make myself peaceful and think about something. Everyone will have the time is confusing and helpless, what shall we do at that time, maybe find somewhere no one can find us. Just to take yourself out of the society, just need quite and no light.
> Does the image remind you of anything? e.g. personal experiences, other photographers’ work etc

I like the subjective thought in the picture, I think thepersonal line of sight is very powerful. It can make the viewer into the feeling what you want to express.

The Photographer’s intentions

> What do you think the photographer’s aims and intentions are?

Just to record the old woman’s life.

> Does the image successfully communicate the photographer’s aims and intentions?

Yes, this picture uses a normal camera to record a part time of the old woman’s daily life. The scene is very truly, just in the house and sitting in the sofa, playing the jigsaw. We can see the tattoo on the woman’s hand, and her cigarette, and her one-piece dress. Maybe she has a very wonderful youth days, maybe she had a lot of pain during her pass days. But now, maybe she is playing with her small baby. Try to quite, earnest and bovine.

Analyzing the image

> What message does the image convey?

There is a big boned woman in the picture. We can see the tattoo on the woman’s hand, and her cheap cigarette, and her cheap one-piece dress. Maybe she has a very wonderful youth days, maybe she had a lot of pain during her pass days. But now, maybe she is playing with her small baby. She is trying to be quite, earnest and bovine.

> What techniques do you think have been used to make the image?

Just find a special people and to express her life. Catch a time she is very interesting. Very truly picture. Truly is a kind of power.

> Has the image been staged?

No, it just records the woman’s life.

Personal Responses

> How does the image make you feel?

Faced this kind of picture, a truly record, I will think about this woman is normal, but of course is special. Everyone is special and has her own story.

 > Does the image remind you of anything? e.g. personal experiences, other photographers’ work etc

I just want to know who the woman is, maybe she’s a nobody. And I want to know how old is she. And I want to know what happened to her ever. I want to know her story when she was young. I want to know, why she is playing jigsaw, who she playing with. I think is he small baby, because in the picture, behind the woman there is a dolly.

Cinema Verite movement

19 10 2008

Sometimes the cinema verite is just a record film, just been nature, been easy. The camera is as your eyes, then you use it to see everything you want to see.

Leacock and Drew, these filmmakers were getting excited by the possibilities of this new approach to recording events and people. They have some characteristics,

just like they use the hand held cameras, they ditch the tripod and dolly, don’t use overlaid sound, all the time they don’t ask any questions, and the important is they

don’t ask anybody to do anything.

The camera is like your eyes, and it can express the train of your thought. What is interesting, then you will look at that place;what makes you feel curiously, you will

look at that place. The camera can reflect it very turely. This kind of record film, can make the viewers into a real space of the producer want to express. And it’s not only

truely and nature, but also is very pureness and believable.

And the sound is very turely, too. They use the live sound, not the overlaid sound, so this kind of film can make the viewers beleable.

Obstructions in film making

19 10 2008

untitled

In the film ‘The Perfect Human’ which is making by Jorgen Leth, and remaked in 1967 with a number of restrictions. Just like no edit greater than 12 frames,no set, shot in Cuba and so on.

In this film, something always been repeat, just like ‘Cuba’,'cigar’, ‘man’,'woman’ and so on. I think it is the main element in the film and in the producer’s head. So repeating with thinking.

And,focusing on the perfect man,the repeating changes into the man’s face, eyes, mouth, the look of cigaring, the clothes, the woman who lelongs to the perfect man, and the inner space of the man, and so on. Find out almost every element of the perfect man, and choose several main elements to express them.
